The Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council invites school+business partnerships across Iowa to submit their proposal to establish a STEM BEST model.

All Iowa private and public schools and school districts serving students in any of grades K-12 are eligible to apply. Each of the six awarded applicants will receive $25,000 each to be matched with local cost-share and will be designated as an Iowa STEM BEST model. The application window will close on Friday, September 23, 2016.

Alliant Energy’s plan to add up to 500 megawatts of wind energy is a large play that will help keep Iowa’s electricity rates low, a key authority on clean energy said.
“Wind energy is now the lowest-cost source of new generation,” Nathaniel Baer, who follows energy issue for the Iowa Environmental Council, said in an interview. “That helps keep things stable and keeps rates low.”
“With both major utilities pursuing significant new wind generation, we have diverse wind energy that supports 6,000 jobs and 75 businesses in the supply chain,” Baer added.

Emily Abbas, chief of staff and chief marketing officer for Bankers Trust, has been named this month’s MVP for Iowa STEM by the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council for her volunteer activities in support of instruction in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. She previously had worked on public relations efforts for STEM efforts as part of her work at a marketing firm. Gov. Terry Branstad appointed Abbas to the state STEM Council in August 2014.
